Alpe d’Huez French ski resort lies inside the Grandes Rousses. The French started the tradition but foreigners soon joined in calling the area the Island of the Sun. Some years, in fact, have recorded several hundred days of visible sunshine. The panoramas are fantastic on the clearest of days and Mount Blanc can be spotted from atop Pic Blanc.

Valmeinier, one of the newer ski resorts in the French Alps, is located in the area of France called Galibier-Thabor. Before 1973, when the village was first able to boast of having its own chair lift, Valmeinier was known not as a place to ski, but rather for its primary industry, mining (Valmeinier translates as the “Valley of the Mines”).
